As I told in the blog post about the meet up with Hayden, Hayden Williams is a talented and successful fashion illustrator. Here you can read his answers to 7 questions I asked.
1. What is your favorite material to work with?
My fave materials are pencils for the initial sketch and alcohol markers for colour. I also like to use fine liner for details.
2. What do you like the most about drawing?
I love the creative freedom I have when I draw. Being able to translate whatever idea I have in my head and put it to paper is the best thing!
3. How do you work?
My process is very simple. I sometimes will have an idea for a collection, theme or design in my head and I will create the preliminary sketches. Once I have done that, I will add colour using markers, scan the work into my computer and do a cleanup/edit. Just to make things more polished. Once i am happy, I share it on my social media and to the world!
4. Who or what is your biggest inspiration?
My inspirations can vary, as you just never know where inspiration can come from sometimes, but I would say the majority of my inspiration comes from pop culture, movies and t.v shows, but also fashion editorials, fashion ad campaigns (vintage and current) and celebrities. I like to combine all of my loves and inspirations together to create what you see in my work.
5. What is your favorite workplace?
Just being in my own space. It could be anywhere because fortunately I can work from home, but wherever I work, I like to be somewhere quiet so that i can focus.
6. What is your favorite travel destination?
I haven’t been to many places yet and I definitely want to travel more to get new inspiration, but I think my fave place thus far was Paris. I went for the first time last year, as my work was being exhibited there. I was there for only a short time, but it’s so beautiful! The architecture looks like something from a film set and the food is wonderful.
7. Do you have any advice for people reading this blog, what is this?
Go and follow your dreams and don’t let anyone tell you can’t achieve your goals! Be consistent in everything you do and be genuinely passionate about what it is you are doing, whether you are in fashion, art or any other field. I would also say to use social media as productively as you can and use it to your advantage. We are so fortunate to be in the age where we can make a career for ourselves by using the internet.
